Direct overlay restorations - a step beyond traditional fillings
Modern composite materials enable us to transcend the traditional boundaries between conservative dentistry and prosthodontics. The direct onlay is a prime example of this evolution. As with conventional indirect overlays, cusps that have suffered significant loss of mechanical strength must be reduced. However, the direct overlay is a single-visit restoration that is sculpted intraorally.
The key to efficiently performing direct overlays lies in respecting dental biomechanics, optimizing the mechanical properties of nanohybrid composites (both packable and flowable), and possessing a precise understanding of molar and premolar anatomy.
